Then she smiled.
“Have a wonderful afternoon, everyone,” she said warmly. A few people quietly returned the greeting.
Margaret walked toward the exit at a relaxed pace. The young security guard opened the door for her.
“Take care, ma’am,” he said.
“You too, son,” Margaret replied. As she stepped outside into the sunlight, the door closed gently behind her. Inside the bank, the lobby remained quiet for a moment longer.
Charles looked at Janet and then back toward the entrance.
“Sometimes,” Janet said softly, “people surprise you.”
Charles nodded slowly. “Yes,” he said.
“They do.”
Across the room, customers gradually returned to their conversations and daily routines. But the story of the quiet ninety-year-old woman who came in “just to check her balance” would likely be remembered by many of them for a long time.
Because the lesson Margaret left behind had nothing to do with money.
