What should he do now? Who can help him? That’s when Svetka Ponomarjowa, an old school friend he hasn’t seen since his youth, reappears in his life.

And she brings a terrifying story with her.

It’s not just a chance meeting at a reunion.

In June, over a few drinks, Svetka confides in him something he still finds hard to understand.

She confesses that she has always loved him and can’t accept that he is married. But that’s not what’s causing the storm that’s about to erupt.

What followed was a terrifying offer that turned Maxim’s blood cold: an exorbitant sum of money, several million dollars, in exchange for his silence.

If he didn’t pay, she threatened to reveal everything that had happened that night.

“What am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to do now?” he whispered, his voice trembling, as he spoke on the phone to his mother, Maria Andreievna.

“He has a video… and he’s threatening to air it if I don’t pay him.”

In the quiet living room, where Maxim sat, shaking and overwhelmed, his wife, Genja, listened to the conversation through the half-open door.

She had said in the morning that she felt unwell and had gone to bed, exhausted and weak. But the noises coming from the next room wouldn’t let her rest. Something was wrong.

Her intuition wouldn’t let her rest; she had to find out what was really tormenting her husband.

“Maxim… what really happened?” his mother asked, her tone reflecting slight concern. “Tell me, son, what’s going on?”

“I don’t know… I don’t remember anything, but she said she had a video. She claimed that… that I… and now she’s asking for money.

She said I did something to her.” Maxim felt the words struggle to escape his throat. “I don’t understand, but… I’m afraid it will ruin my life.”

“I understand,” Maria Andreievna replied calmly, though Maxim sensed a hint of worry in her voice. “But you have to calm down. If you don’t do anything, don’t let it scare you!”

While Maxim tried to gather his thoughts, Genja, hiding behind the door, felt her heart beating faster than usual.

She didn’t know what had happened, but the uncertainty in Maxim’s voice, the tension in the air… it was all shattering her world.

Should she trust him? Had he told her the truth? Or was he involved in something she didn’t understand?

“Maxim, what’s really going on?” she whispered softly, getting out of bed.

With light steps, she went to the window, drew the curtains slightly, and stood where Maxim couldn’t see. He listened attentively.

Maxim continued speaking. “After the meeting, we went to Wovka’s dacha… I don’t know what happened, but Svetka said… that I forced her… What should I do, Mom? I can’t stop thinking about it.

I’m afraid she’ll destroy everything.”

“And what did she have in her hands? Did you see the video? Did she tell you she talked to the police?” her mother asked.

“I don’t know… she said she wrote everything down.” Maxim couldn’t believe what she was saying. “And now she’s demanding…”

“Listen, Maxim,” his mother interrupted, her tone firm. “Don’t give her any more money.

Don’t let him control your life! Don’t get sucked into his lies anymore. Tell him you’re going to call the police and show him you can’t let him treat you like this.

Genja, who had been listening silently and with increasing tension behind the thick curtains, felt a new clarity invade his mind.

Now he knew this wasn’t just a misunderstanding. He had to make a decision. And he had no doubt that Maxim wasn’t lying.

But was she ready to face what was coming? How far would he go to get out of this situation?

When Maxim ended the call, Genja, wasting no time, emerged from his hiding place and walked resolutely toward him.

Maxim looked at her, his eyes wide with fear and surprise. “Genja… You heard everything, right?”

She nodded silently. “Yes, Maxim. I heard everything. And you know what?” He paused, letting her words sink in. “I believe you.

But you have to promise me something: you’ll never let anything like this happen to you again. We’ll be in this together, but you must take responsibility.”

Maxim looked at her with a mixture of relief and anxiety. “I promise you, Genja. I’ll do everything you ask. But… now I need you more than ever.”

Genja nodded. He knew that trust didn’t return immediately. But if Maxim changed, if he took responsibility, she would be by his side.

Svetka wouldn’t win. She would never enter their lives again. Maxim would do everything possible to protect what he loved most: his family.

“Now you have to let Svetka know that you won’t give in to her blackmail,” Genja said, her voice determined. “Go to the police to stop her extortion. And if she continues to threaten you, she’ll have to face the consequences.”

Maxim nodded, feeling all his doubts vanish. In that moment, he knew he wasn’t alone. Together they would fight to ensure that no lies or blackmail would destroy their marriage.

With that new determination, they began to build their future. They knew it wouldn’t be easy, but they wouldn’t allow the shadows of the past to crush them.
